What is 220V to 380V VFD?

Jinma 220/380 series is a single-phase input three-phase output frequency-converter power supply or VFD. It receives 220V/50Hz from the mains and provides three-phase 380V with adjustable speed and frequency from 0 to 400Hz (for three-phase industrial equipments to operate with single-phase power connection without installing a three-phase power line).

Working Principle: AC–DC–AC Conversion:

  • Rectification. The incoming single-phase 220V/50Hz AC is rectified through a bridge and smoothed by filter capacitors into DC.
  • Inversion. IGBT power modules and SPWM (sinusoidal pulse-width modulation) technology synthesize this DC into three-phase AC with adjustable voltage, frequency, and phase.
  • Control and output. A microprocessor manages the process, delivering standard three-phase 380V output at adjustable frequencies from 0 to 400Hz — a clean sine wave matched to the driven motor.

Quick Selection Table

Three-phase motor powerRecommended Jinma modelEstimated single-phase input currentTypical applications
0.75 – 1.5 kWVFD-220/380-2.2kW7 – 15 ASmall drill presses, grinders, water pumps
2.2 – 4 kWVFD-220/380-5.5kW15 – 25 AAir compressors, medium fans, woodworking machines
5.5 – 7.5 kWVFD-220/380-11kW25 – 35 AHydraulic presses, conveyors, large pumps
11 – 15 kWVFD-220/380-18.5kW40 – 60 ANeeds a dedicated high-current single-phase line (e.g., C63 breaker)

Important: for machines above 11kW, verify the incoming single-phase capacity (meter, wiring, breaker) first — the drive is only part of the system. Jinma also offers custom higher-power configurations.

How to Select the Right VFD

Correct sizing decides whether the application works. Three steps:

  1. Check the load. Read the motor nameplate: rated power (kW) and rated current (A).
  2. Size the VFD. As a rule, the VFD’s rated output power should be equal to or greater than the motor’s power. For normal loads such as fans and pumps, choose one model size up (e.g., a 7.5kW motor pairs with an 11kW drive). For heavy-start loads such as crushers and punch presses, allow 1.5–2 size steps.
  3. Verify the incoming single-phase line. A practical estimate: single-phase input current (A) ≈ motor power (kW) × 2. A 4kW motor, for example, draws about 8A from the single-phase line — confirm the circuit, socket, and meter can carry it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Single-Phase Power Can't Directly Drive Three-Phase Equipment

Before choosing a solution, it helps to understand the problem. Three factors block a direct connection:a

  • Phase count mismatch.Single-phase supply delivers one AC voltage, while a standard three-phase motor needs three phases 120° apart to generate a rotating magnetic field. Connected directly, the motor cannot develop that field — it hums, fails to start, and can burn out over time.
  • Voltage mismatch.Three-phase equipment is rated at 380V (line-to-line), while single-phase mains is 220V (phase-to-neutral). The voltage levels simply do not match.
  • Power limits.Single-phase circuits have limited current capacity, and three-phase machines are usually high-power. Drawing that load through a single-phase line can overload the wiring.
Traditional Workarounds and Their Limitations

Before VFDs became practical and affordable, four approaches were common — each with real drawbacks:

MethodHow it worksMain limitations
Single-phase-in / three-phase-out VFDRectifies 220V AC to DC, then inverts DC to three-phase ACThe modern, recommended approach; note the drive’s effect on motor behavior (low-speed torque, harmonics)
Capacitor phase-splittingA parallel capacitor creates a shifted phase to mimic three-phaseOnly practical for small motors under about 1.5kW; non-standard output, low torque and efficiency, risk of motor damage
Rotary phase converterA single-phase motor spins a three-phase generatorHeavy, noisy, inefficient, poor output waveform, high maintenance — largely obsolete
Replacing the motorSwap the three-phase motor for a single-phase oneExpensive; few high-power single-phase options; high starting current; existing equipment may not be compatible

For applications that need reliable, stable three-phase power, a single-phase-input VFD — also called a single-to-three-phase VFD or frequency-converter power supply — is the most practical and widely adopted solution today.

Typical Applications
  • Small-scale machining and repair:CNC lathes, mills, drills, and cutters in home workshops and repair shops.
  • Agriculture:three-phase pumps, irrigation systems, and feed-processing machinery on remote farms and orchards.
  • Equipment commissioning and demonstration:testing or showing three-phase machines in showrooms and labs that only have single-phase power.
  • Temporary construction:powering drills, mixers, and hoists on building and renovation sites.
  • Commercial:three-phase central air-conditioning outdoor units in shops and supermarkets supplied by single-phase mains.
Can I really run a three-phase motor from single-phase power?

Yes. A single-phase-input / three-phase-output VFD is designed exactly for this: it converts 220V single-phase mains into standard three-phase 380V. The Jinma series covers motors from 0.75kW up to 15kW, with larger sizes available on request.

Will my single-phase line handle it?

For a typical 4kW motor, input current is around 8A — usually fine on a standard residential circuit, but check the breaker, socket, and meter rating. Soft start also prevents inrush current from tripping the line.

What protections does the Jinma VFD include?

Overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating, short-circuit, and phase-loss protection, plus soft start — protecting both the drive and the downstream motor.

Can it power equipment other than motors?

Yes. The drive outputs genuine three-phase 380V and can supply precision instruments, test benches, and small production lines that require three-phase power.
